Podgorze district, situated on the right bank of the Vistula River, was an unwilling witness to the annihilation of Krakow Jews. In 1941 Nazi Germans established there a ghetto for all Krakow Jews. Sixty-five thousand Jewish citizens from Krakow were murdered during the Holocaust and only a small percentage survived WWII.
The youngest of Krakow districts Nowa Huta was designed and built to accommodate the needs of the nearby steelworks. Thousand of young people from all over the country took part in the creation of the new life there. For generations, the life of people of the area has been revolving around the plant. The living quarters of Nowa Huta were exclusively designed in the style of Socialist realism, which was invented to emphasise the strength and might of the state. In the year 2009 Nowa Huta celebrates its 60th anniversary.
